Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. Unlike other nutrients that we primarily get from food, we get most of our Vitamin D from sun exposure. Here in Canada our body's levels of Vitamin D decline in the winter months and that is why it is important to supplement. A general recommendation is to take 2000-4000 IU throughout the Winter months. Maintaining your Vitamin D levels throughout the Winter has a variety of health benefits including benefitting the immune system and mood.
Research shows optimal vitamin D levels are related to a reduced risk of a variety of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, infectious disease, and cancer (PMID 28580189). As a Kamloops Naturopath with preventive health top of mind, Vitamin D is something I discuss with my patients all year round, but especially this time of year.
Vitamin D Testing:
Testing Vitamin D is not necessary in all cases but does provide the advantage of allowing higher dosing to achieve optimal levels quickly and safely. Vitamin D testing involves a trip to the lab and once we get your results, I will recommend a personalized dose that could be much higher than the standard dosing. Testing Vitamin D also provides the advantage of allowing Vitamin D injections to be considered, which are the quickest way to increase levels.
Vitamin D Supplementation:
All Vitamin D supplements are not created equal. The first thing to look for is a Vitamin D3 form. For oral supplementation, I recommend an emulsified D3 liquid product. Remember that Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, so it is best absorbed when taken with a meal containing fat. You can take the supplement any time of day.
