Naturopathic Treatment for IBS

What is IBS?

IBS is a common condition affecting the digestive system, and can cause symptoms like cramps, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and usually come and go over time. There are different types of IBS depending on which symptoms a person primarily has. A naturopathic doctor can help with symptoms and treatment of IBS.

Naturopathic Treatment for IBS

A naturopathic visit for digestive conditions includes a focus on what the underlying cause of symptoms could be. By understanding when the symptoms started, what makes it better or worse, and the nature of the symptoms, it helps me make recommendations that help long term. Common underlying causes for IBS include stress, microbiome imbalances and food sensitivities.

Naturopathic Treatment for IBS often includes dietary changes, probiotics, and botanical medicine recommendations. A basic elimination diet can be a good place to start, or a food sensitivity test can be used to guide dietary changes. Exercise has also been studied as a treatment for IBS and there is some evidence that it may improve symptoms.

There is a lot of interesting research pointing to the role of the gut microbiome affecting many aspects of a person's health, including conditions more likely to co-exist with IBS (PMID: 25339800). This is the reason that probiotics are often an effective and holistic treatment option.
